Treating
Depression
Before you can treat depression you have to know exactly
what you are dealing with. Depression is no laughing matter
because about 15 million people in America suffer from it.
The most troubling aspect is that only about 1/3 of those
people seek help. It's the stereotypes associated with mental
illness that plague far too many people. Their character is so
important that they don't want a label like “crazy” to tarnish
it. To start treating depression first it has to be
diagnosed. Diagnosis doesn't happen while the sufferer hides
the problem. That's the terrible merry go round of
depression.
Depression stems from many things. Biological, emotional,
environmental and physical factors can result in depression .
Don't overlook the genetic link. Many diseases are passed on
through a family. It's not just family history but also family
dynamics. The stress of everyday life can be brutal. The
constant struggle just to survive bothers some. Even success
and fitting into society can be the problem for others. Then
there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused
physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with
despair. It's a long list.
Depression is often hard to find in its early form. Even while
a loved one suffers from this disease the signs may be hard to
notice. Everyone fights some mild distress once in awhile. This
is natural. Real depression is a lot more permanent and
serious. It's already too late for early detection when the
symptoms interfere with life. Those suffering from depression
tend to feel all alone and disgusted with life. They no longer
recognize any hope for their life. Their sleep habits and
simple enjoyments in life begin to be effected in a negative
way. At this point treatment has become literally a matter of
life and death.
In treating depression you have to reinstall hope and
purpose into those that are suffering. This is typically
achieved through 'talk therapy'. It's effective after months
and sometimes years of treatment. Doctors can also administer
drugs such as Prozac or Paxil or other anti-depressants .
Although they have some serious side effects, these medicines
work. Studies also show that some herbs can be effective as
depression treatment. Another effective solution is a
depression support group. Medical professionals should be
consulted if you or someone you know shows symptoms of
depression.
